About keeping your kit dry ...

Waterproof Rucksack Covers
These waterproof rucksack covers take up very little room but which will cover your entire rucksack if required. They come with their own little stuff sack which has belt loops so it can be easily attached to your rucksack for easy access.

There is nothing worse than your rucksack getting very wet and all the contents getting damp. We sell these covers in 2 sizes medium fits up to 40-60 litre cover and the large which fits the 65-95 litre rucksacks. We have had customers email us telling how it has saved their camping trip.

Many of our customers were asking about rucksack covers for travelling especially in airports, trains and coaches. We found a great product which is a transit holdall for storing your rucksack in whilst in transit. It helps prevent transit damage as all your straps etc will not get caught in conveyor belts and it makes it easier too handle. The zip can be padlocked so helps protect against theft when your rucksack is not with you but in cargo. Can hold a rucksack up to 90 litres. A great simple product which is so practical we can see why so many of our customers were requesting it.

We also sell combo transit holdalls which can be converted in to waterproof rucksack covers in 2 sizes. It does all the things the transit holdall does above and is padlockable but it can be used as a waterproof cover making it versatile and a must for travelling.

PVC Dry bags are great heavy duty 100% waterproof storage sacks which will keep its contents dry with its welded seams and watertight seal. These bags are bought a lot by lovers of watersports especially canoe enthusiasts. We stock them in 2 colours black and bright orange, in three sizes 15, 30 and 45 litre.

About keeping you sane and comfortable ...

Hiking and camping are the best outdoor pursuits in my opinion and they can be hard work but I have a few products to make life a little more comfortable. Put them on your list as absolute essentials.

Folding Sit Mats
These folding sitting mats are a must for your derriere! I love walking BUT not keen on sitting on damp rocks/grass for my coffee breaks. These mats fold up compact so they don’t take up much room in your rucksack or you could attach it to the outside. Then when you stop for a break no more cold numb bum for you. Turns any knobbly cold places into a soft dry seats. Very reasonably priced but worth their weight in gold. You may need to buy some for your friends to save them stealing yours!!

Insect Head Nets
Midge and Mosquito Head/Hat nets are a must in Scotland at certain times of the year, I think you could eat your body weight in midges. At dusk they can descend like a black cloud. They particulary like my sweet blood and there is nothing more horrible then red midge bites on your face except perhaps larger red mosquito bites on your face. When you are walking or putting up your tent there is nowhere to hide .. The midge net is your saviour, we took them on the highland way last year. They can be worn with or without a hat and has an elasticated neck. It has a fine mesh and is not impregnated with chemicals as there is no need (they can’t get through it).

Camping Equipment

Sleeping Bags
Sleeping bags are one of the most important items in your kit for comfort. Sleeping bags tend to be of two types - synthetic or down.

Down bags are normally stuffed with the down from the breast of duck or geese. These have fantastic insulating properties but are not suitable for anybody with feather allergies. One of the drawbacks with down is that it tends to clump together when damp and lose its insulating properties. Once this happens the springiness it had has most probably been lost.

There is a huge variation of quality when it comes to synthetic bags. It depends on what purpose for which you require the sleeping bag - crashing at a friend's place or snuggling up to a mountain! The synthetic filling works in the same way as down in that it traps warm air produced by your body heat. The great advantage of synthetic over down is that when it gets damp, or even wet, it still retains some of its insulation. Our Echo sleeping bags are filled with high quality fibres, which are very effective at trapping warm air.

The lining of your sleeping bag needs to be soft and comfortable and the outside needs to durable and breathable so you don’t become all clammy inside your sleeping bag. Most sleeping bags have season ratings and these can help you decide what type of sleeping bag you require.

One season
The bag is suitable for summer camping and not in a harsh climate.

Two seasons
Comfortable also in autumn or spring.

Three Seasons
Except from cold winter use, will keep you comfortable most of the time.

Four Seasons
Fine for all year round.

Five seasons
For expeditions and low temperatures

The better classification is the more modern European standard which is more detailed and accurate in its description, giving temperature ratings across three ranges - Comfort, Limit, and Extreme.

Our sleeping bags all have the European and season ratings on them. We even have tropical sleeping bags for tropical climates, great for travellers and gap year students. All bags come with their own stuff sack, which leads us onto our next topic.

Stuff sacks
Lots of our products come in their own stuff sack. Stuff sacks are great little bags for keeping everything compact and tidy. Can you imagine the mess of your rucksack or roofbox if everything was loose.

Getting a sleeping bag into a stuff sack can be quite difficult, but there is an easy way. The trick is not to fold it in any sort of tidy manner and then attempt to get the whole thing in. You need to stuff the foot end into your bag and keep going. It will all go in and then pull the drawstring tight. Some stuff sacks also have compression straps to make it even smaller.

Sleeping mats
Sleeping mats are a must for comfort and will help soften any rough ground and help keep you above from the cold and damp. We sell nato ground mats and self-inflating mats. The ground mats are light and easy to strap to your rucksack.

The Thermalite mattress is a godsend and an absolute must for a warm nights' sleep floating above the cold hard ground. It is self-inflating, so no carrying around pumps and no puff required. It automatically inflates as you roll it out. Both sides of the mat are non-slip so it allows your sleeping bag to grip the surface and the underside of the mat to grip the tent floor. It is also ultra light and compact and can be easily deflated and strapped to your rucksack. The range includes the Ultra (light and compact) to the Comfort (really comfortfortable, surprisingly enough).

Pillows
One of the most important things for me is sleep, especially if I am walking or climbing during the day. I cannot get comfortable without a pillow. A makeshift pillow like my jacket in my sleeping bags nylon stuff bag just isn’t good enough for me. It makes my face sweat and I usually awake with a sore neck and a foul mood.

The Micro-pillow is the answer to my prayers. Made with ‘supersoft polycotton’ and a ‘hollowfibre stuffing’ it is so comfortable. It is small and light and doesn’t take up that much room in your rucksack. A good night’s sleep in a little bag, it comes with it’s own stuff sack.

We also have the Thermalite pillow, which is self-inflating too.

Insect nets
At night, a great way to protect yourself from midges and mosquitos is with a single insect bed net. They can be secured over a single bed or campsite bed to keep the little beggers out. Our nets have an ultra fine mesh, which means they can’t get through it and no chemical impregnation is required. They are light and compact with their own handy stuff sack and spare hangers. It weighs almost nothing and can easily be popped in your rucksack.

Clothing

Of course clothing depends on the conditions you will be exposed to, but layering is the key when dressing of the outdoors. Then you can add or take away to be as comfortable as possible. Starting with base layers, right up to hats and gloves, we can kit you out in what you require. Our outdoor clothing range is always growing.

Base Layers
Base layers keep you warm in winter and cool in summer. The Climate X fabric that these garments are made from has excellent wicking properties, which speed evaporation. It is a quick drying material, which has been treated with an anti-bacterial. The leggings and tops have all been designed for comfort with flat seams positioned where possible away from abrasion prone areas. No shoulder seams directly on the shoulder and side seams brought forward.

About keeping yourself dry ...

Gaiters
The best item to prevent muddy and damp trouser bottoms when rambling across wet grass is waterproof gaiters. The gaiters are a universal fit and very good quality. They are made from a rip-stop fabric, which is tough and durable. They are easy to put on and stay on with stirrups and drawcord top. They come in three colours - red, dark blue, or olive green, one of which should go with most jackets.

Waterproof Poncho

Keep a waterproof poncho at the top of your rucksack for easy access. Not only will it cover you, but also your rucksack. It is made from a durable rip-stop material making it light and strong and it is 100% waterproof. The sides can be closed with studs making arms making it easier to move.
